Are you scared when something is wrong with one of your vehicle’s parts?
Our vehicles come equipped with warning lights that alert us when there is an issue. Through our vehicle dashboard lights, our truck will show us which area of the car needs to be taken off.
There are several different malfunction indicator lights, and various vehicles have other lights to mean different things. While a standard “reminder” light (oil change, gaslight, etc.) can be easily solved, the “check engine” light requires a thorough investigation.
Here are some reasons your check engine light may have turned on:
– Loose or Broken Gas Cap
When the check engine light comes on, the best-case scenario is that you didn’t tighten the gas cap the last time you filled it up.
– Oxygen sensor failure
Your vehicle’s oxygen sensor measures the amount of unburnt oxygen in a car’s exhaust system. If this sensor is failing, your engine will keep running but will be burning more fuel than usual.
– Bad Ignition Coil
The ignition creates the electrical pathway necessary to get your car’s engine started. If sensors detect that the path is not allowing the right amount of electrical current to flow through, the light will be turned on.
– Bad spark plug wires
Some signs of bad spark plug wires include idling, a noticeable drop in engine performance, and the check engine light turning on. If your spark plugs need to be replaced, you can get them from an auto parts store, or we at Rube’s Auto can provide them for you.
– Emissions equipment problems
Modern vehicles have a plethora of emissions equipment onboard. There’s the exhaust gas recirculation system, the catalytic converter, the evaporative emissions system – the list goes on and on. Each piece of the puzzle is designed to minimize tailpipe emissions, thereby, protecting the environment and making the world a safer place.
We won’t get into each of these components and systems individually because, frankly, there are too many to list. cipf-es.org But trust us when we say an emissions equipment failure can easily turn on the check engine light.
